Brain Truffles from my iZombie Kitchen

Hi Internet People,

Last night I whipped up some brain truffles for iZombie night, here’s pic of the finished recipe for you:

Now if you want to make your own truffles here are the ingredients you’ll need.

One bag of golden Oreos, two 12 ounce bags of white chocolate chips, an 8 ounce package of cream cheese, and red food coloring.

Now most people use a food processor to make these, but I was working on these pretty late at night and didn’t want to wake up my entire house so I put the Oreos in two different ziplock baggies and rolled over them with a rolling pin until they were mashed pretty well.

After I mashed them up I dumped both bags into a medium sized bowl and added the cream cheese, which I let sit until it was room temperature.

Then I mushed it all together with my hands until it looked like a brown blob.

I then put on some disposable gloves and added red food coloring, about five drops, and then I mashed it back up until it turned pink all over.

Since I didn’t use a food processor there were some yellow cookie bits still in there, but it’s okay, it just adds character. Next you need to take the pink cookie blob and portion it out into balls. No lie, I totally screwed up this part of the recipe. I was supposed to get like 40 balls and wound up with about 12. I’m really good at portion sizes guys.

Now you need to put all your brainy balls into the fridge to cool, that should take about a half hour. I messed up a few by not waiting for the balls to cool, please learn from my mistakes and cool first.

I then set up a double boiler on the stove. I’ve used that system before, but if you haven’t you just need to fill a pot with water and put a metal or glass bowl in it/on top of it. Make sure the water just touches the bottom of the bowl. Then fill the bowl with the white chocolate chips and turn the burner on high. The chips will start to melt pretty quickly after that.

Once the chocolate is melted you can add in your red food coloring, three or four drops will do. Once the chocolate is a nice pink, reduce your heat so you don’t get burned. Now okay I totally messed this part up, but my mom and brother apparently knew what I did wrong so you guys won’t have to deal with what I did. Once you have your chilled brain balls, put a toothpick in them. Then dip the ball, while holding the toothpick, into the chocolate.

I totally didn’t do that, I just put my balls into the chocolate and attempted to fish them out with a fork, because that’s what my recipe said to do. It was a disaster! I almost burned myself like three times, ruined three of the balls, and had to try and remelt the chocolate to finish the last ball, which pretty much didn’t work. So while I got three balls that turned out pretty, the other ones I made are huge and super messy.

My pretty ones that you got to see on Twitter and earlier in this post I decorated by dipping a toothpick in a little bowl with red food coloring in it and drawing little lines. Here’s the outside and inside of the nice ones.

The inside looks a bit like salami or pepperoni, but I promise they taste delicious. If you make these I’d love to see them so you can always tweet me pics, @kleffnotes, or leave one in the comments. I posted an iZombie video on my YouTube channel that you can check out. You can also find some other fun videos over there. There are also some amazing articles over on The Nerdy Girl Express.

Talk to ya tomorrow,

Katherine
